In this world we will have persecutions, in the family, in the workplace, in the church, and in our neighborhood. As Christians we are called to a higher road during these persecutions. When we pass the test of integrity and make the hard choices in the face of difficulties, we grow stronger and God gets the glory, for it is not of ourselves, but Christ that lives in us.
Just the other day while walking on my street, a neighbor's dogs got loose and they ran out of their house right towards me in the street. Three little ankle bitters barking away. Knowing they were pets I tried to calm them down by talking to them as they were barking and all of of sudden one jumped up and bit me on my hand. At that point I started kicking and yelling at them instead of being nice! The owner proceeded to get the dogs under control and then tell me how I should have responded. I said, your dog just bit me! To say I was cordial would be a lie, but I did walk away, after saying she should take better control of her dogs!
In the natural I was tempted to call the police and report the dog, then my anger turned to fear. What if the dog didn't have his shots and I couldn't even remember the last time I had a tetanus shot! My desire was to strike back, but the lingering question in my head was what if that was me and what would Jesus do? Hmmm.....so I decided to sit on it and see how my hand was, and the next day I approached the family and asked for the dog's shot records. After some discussion their records were given and I got a long overdue tetanus shot, and saw it for my own good. In the end I was able to be kinder and not strike out in retribution, even though I was tempted.
How about you? Your spouse yells at you for no good reason, your child lies to you, your colleague talks behind your back trying to make you look bad to your boss, and someone almost causes you to get in a wreck, how do you respond?
Romans 5:3 "And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience."
JOHN 16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
I pray that when the persecutions come and difficulties arise, that we reflect Jesus, being the salt and light for a witness to the difference he makes in our lives, and for our own growth, even when life bites us!

They Will Know Him By Our Love....
In giving, for me, there is always the dilemma of how much to help and when to get involved. I had a neighbor friend offer a book for me to read titled "When Giving Hurts". The premise of the book as described by her is that when giving, you have the other person do something in return. During our conversation I mentioned a neighbor that had back issues and was on disability. In trying to decide how to help, it was shared to me that in the past a friend would offer to help clean his house periodically. When I mentioned this to the neighbor she said, "Well he would have to do something in return". Her response caused me to pause.
As I chewed on her advice, without reading the book, I thought to see what the bible says about helping others. As you may have read, it implies to help those who cannot give in return. Take Luke 14:12-14 as an example. "Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor [thy] rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just."
Thankfully Christ gives freely of his grace and forgiveness recognizing there is nothing we can do to earn our salvation, but it is a gift from God!
Now in that forgiveness we will change our behavior as he molds us into his likeness and makes us new creatures, but it is his unconditional love that draws us to him daily! We will mess up, we will make mistakes, we will not be our best all the time, but for the grace of God over time we will become more like him, but it is not our works that make us holy, but his mercy towards us each new day.
Ephesians 2:9-10 puts it like this. "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them".
So my journey continues, and I pray yours does too, for the world will know him by our love.

A Day of Blessings.....
At the beginning of the day, a simple prayer of use me and help me be a blessing to others, turned into a day filled with hugs and gratefulness as God used me to be his hands and feet.
I had invited a young mother and her son, who are going through some life struggles, to go blueberry picking with me as a fun family outing. I had saved the last $14 of my cash I had on hand to pay for their 2 buckets of blueberries we were going to pick later that day. In the meantime I decided to go to the beach for a bike ride and then for a walk.
When I went to the local park to change clothes I noticed a older gentleman resting his eyes with his bike leaning against his legs. He was dressed okay, but I found it odd that he would be napping upright at midday unless he didn't have anywhere else to go, because it was also hot. So I took note and then proceeded to change and while changing it struck me that he may need some help. As awkward as helping is though I asked Lord, what should I do, then I thought about the $14 I had for blueberry picking. Should I give it to him instead? Well the urging didn't pass, so when I went back to my car to change my shoes I got the money and folded it up and walked back over to give it to him. As I approached, not wanting to startle him, I said, "sir" as I got close. He opened his eyes and looked at me and I stuck out my hand with the money towards him. He said why? I then thought I had made a mistake and he wasn't in need after all and was just merely napping, so I asked do you need money? He said, "yes" and proceeded to extend his hands for a hug of appreciation. It was so sweet I wanted to cry and was fighting to hold back the tears and could barely say God Bless you as I hugged him and walked away. He replied at my parting, now that is "love", which only made the tears flow and he said, "you are truly blessed". Because I did not want him to see my tears, I keep walking away and just waved without turning around with a lump in my throat. As I continued to go on my walk, I thanked God for allowing me to be a blessing to this elderly gentleman, and yet it turned out I was the one that received the blessing!
If the day had ended there that would have been awesome in and of itself, but I continued on my familiar path of walking past million dollar mansions that are beach side, when I saw another elderly gentleman, but this one from one of the million dollar homes and his nurse that takes care of him. I would assume based on my observation that he has dementia. They were walking towards me arm in arm, when they got closer I stepped aside to allow them to pass, however they then stopped where I was, the gentleman paused and put out his arms for a hug. Now he doesn't speak, but I graciously gave him a hug and said God bless you. He looked in my eyes and just smiled. I told the nurse how sweet and she said, "yes". I then proceeded on in the opposite direction wondering what in the world was going on! I had never had interactions with this man on any other day. Then I thought to say a prayer of healing from him, and thanked God for allowing me to be his hands and feet, again....
Well the day wasn't over, I still had blueberry picking to be done. After making my way back home, stopping to cash a check so I would have the cash needed, I took a quick check at the weather before getting in my car and stopped to pick up the young mom and her son. Once we arrived they said, " pick quick, impending weather is coming". So I said a silent prayer and asked for protection while we picked. The boy and mom were exclaiming at all the blueberries covering acres of trees! They were so excited and started picking, chattering away and having a good time. We filled up 2 gallon buckets with no weather issues and just after leaving, not even half a mile down the road, we noticed it had rained heavily as all the roads were puddled. Once back at their little rental, she gave me a great big hug and said thank you so much for taking the time to spend with us. When I pulled up at our home my husband said it had been raining 45 minutes straight and had just stopped before I got home. God had truly answered my prayers and we were blessed with sunshine and protection during the entire outing. I was wowed once more by God's mercies.
Now I wish I could say everyday was as rich and meaningful as this day was for me, but it did remind me that we are blessed as much if not more in our obedience to God's still small voice and promptings, if we are willing. At all points I could have made excuses, not prayed, or been too wrapped up in myself to see the opportunities, but for the grace of God he allowed me to be sensitive to his promptings and hence I was blessed in return!
I pray you are encouraged in the sharing of my wanderings, and enjoy God's blessings and mercies each new day!

Keep Fighting The Good Fight!
It is easy to become weary as parents, teachers, pastors and the likes. We all become weary over a period of time and must recharge. I must admit after returning from overseas, I was just plum worn out! I needed familiar food, rest, safety, friends and the likes to recharge my battery so to speak.
Sometimes in life without enough breaks and fuel stops, we become less efficient instead of more productive. This is counterintuitive, because it would seem the work isn't getting done and we are as my husband would say, "Leading the life of Riley!" Still not sure where that saying came from, but I do understand he is saying, I am being a bum!
Jesus put it like this. Psalms 23:2 "He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters." He also orders the sabbath day as a day of rest for us, knowing that we need to retreat and regroup in order that we might continue on effectively.
Knowing what recharges us is important. With an athlete it is proper nutrition combined with physical rest. For others it is being around people, yet some like me, it is a long walk on the beach, biking or gardening. When we include these "rest" periods in our day, weeks and years we are better equipped and more productive when we need to be.
If I am weary and rundown, there is no overflow for which to give to others. As Christians we know that daily prayer and reading the bible gives us strength for each new day. If I am not plugging in on a daily basis for my spiritual body, then I will become weary in well doing. Galatians 6:9 "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
A favorite encouragement in my role as a teacher is to say, "Do not quit"! Rest, recharge, get back up and keep trying! Sometimes the only difference between success and failure is the unwillingness to quit trying!
Upon returning from overseas, we have been blessed to live in my mom's old trailer where she use to live, and without a full-time job this has left me with extra time on my hands. Because of my experience in India, I have paid more attention to those in need around me and in my own neighborhood. I was blessed the other day when a young family I have been helping with food, said they wanted to come to church with me. I was wowed by God's mercy and love for this young family, seeing Christ's love for them, as he knocked at their heart's door, then allowed me to be his hands and feet! Wowed once again!
That brings me to a song that is on my heart..http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=utf-8&fr=aaplw&p=unspoken,++good+fight

God's Love
As a teacher often times in class I will ask the young students why we have rules? They have learned the correct answers and are more accepting and appreciative of them, or at least when they are following them.
I often take it one step further and ask them why do their parent's have rules? This is sometimes harder for them to answer because it has not always been explained to them. I make it funny and ask do you think your parent's don't like you and want to make your life miserable? For young kids they know this is not true. Of course I know not to ask teenagers that question, because somewhere along the line we tend to think of parent's as our enemies.
Just the other day I asked my daughter, soon to be 22, to please break up her trip going back to school halfway and visit her Aunt and spend the night, then proceed on the next day. This would allow her a chance to visit as well as being more rested while driving. As you may imagine, instead of seeing my suggestion or request as caring for her safety and valuing the family, she saw it as a need to hide her intentions from me, as if I was the enemy without her best interest at heart. As a parent this is baffling to me! How can little kids get it, then as we get older we lose perspective?
This brings me to how God must feel about us sometimes. He has given his best with guidelines for success and happiness and somewhere along the way we think we know better than God and try to hide what we do, because we believe we know what is best and we go our own way!
I am grateful for a loving God that no matter how far we stray, he never seeks to punish us for our disobedience, yet continues to pursue us in love calling us back to him for our good, so that we don't get hurt by our choices. Selfless love, it really is to hard to imagine, until you become a parent.... I am reminded of Nineveh in Genesis, as a great example of God's mercy, yet Jonah and his desire for punishment to the people.
As I reflect, I am thankful to the Lord for never giving up on me, and helping me to be a loving parent, modeling his love, as he has so graciously always been to me, even in my disobedience.
Godspeed....

Storms of Life...
As I sit and reflect, reading past posts about the journeys we have been on, I am once again encouraged to keep walking. In the natural it is easy to get afraid and stop moving because we cannot see ahead of us, much like driving in rain where visibility is limited. It is only natural to slow down and sometimes even pull off the road, until you can determine where the road even is.
I sometimes feel like that in my walk with Christ. I am called to go, yet as I start making plans invariably my vision gets cloudy and I don't see a way. I instinctively freeze for lack of a view. What my past successes has afforded me though, is a confidence in God's protection and a peace in the storm even when I cannot see the road. On our recent trip back from my daughter's college graduation we encountered intense storms that hindered our view and caused us to slow down and eventually pull over. As the rains slacked where we could see the road we proceeded on with the journey even though our view was still limited. That reminds me of my current situation. Though the details remain obscure, and my vision is limited to just ahead of us, I keep moving and the road always appears beneath me as I need it too.
Faith really is a daily walk or drive, based on my recent experience. We are called to trust God as a little child. Mark 10:16. "Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them."
I recently accepted a teaching post in Austin, TX and the process of moving begins again. A place to live, leaving behind family, friends and things. Starting over once again....Will this be our last move, how long will we stay, what does God have in mind for us here? All good and valid questions that I have no answers to. I do know however who holds my hand and for now that is enough.
Listen to this song and be encouraged in your storm, trusting God to see you through.

Listen to this song and be encouraged in your storm, trusting God to see you through.

God Loves You More Than You Can Imagine!
The other day while talking with my daughter it became apparent that she had forgotten how much I had and do sacrifice for her. I had to remind her of where she came from and how much had been done for her to be where she was. That it was not only her own merit, but prayer and sacrifice of not only me, but her dad, grandparents, aunts and uncles. As silly as it seemed to me, I had to remind her that I loved her more than anything, and there was nothing I would not do for her!
Is that not just like it is with us and Jesus? We get caught up in the world and focus on our own circumstances, thinking it is all about us, we forget all that God has done for you and me, and that he loves us more that we can imagine! He died for us, what more does he have to do? If we do not hear from him it is because we do not speak to him or listen to him. Much like Adam and Eve hid from him because of their choices, yet he still pursued them. He is always present, even in our sin, but when we allow the world and our decisions to choke out our relationship with our Creator, we forfeit that intimate fellowship and protection that he promises to us, his children. The one who loves us more than anything is waiting to hear from us! His love never changes!
Are you like my daughter who needs reminding of how much she is loved, and how much sacrifice has been paid for her? Are you hardheaded and determined to do things your way and forfeit the love of your Creator who knit you in your mother's womb and desires only the best for you?
I pray that we are all reminded this day to value what we have as God's children, that we walk more humbly in this world, shinning our light bright for Jesus in all we think say and do!

You Are Loved For Who You Are!
The other morning while driving to work I came within seconds and inches of leaving this earth, because of a high speed car on the interstate. It made me reflect and appreciate another day that God had given me to live. I then looked inward to see if I had regrets and at first I thought no, but then several days later, I think differently based on a reference given by a friend. He was asked to write 3 character traits that best represented me. What he wrote brought tears to my eyes as I saw myself through his eyes. It could have easily been read at my funeral, had my life ended that previous day.
As somber as all of this sounds it made me realize that we can, rather I can or should share, more with those around me. Do I have words that I would speak at a funeral, but have not shared at least once with that person? Would I wish I had told them how special they were to me?
Just yesterday my daughter called and shared a situation from a mutual friend whose parents have disowned him as a result of a life-style choice that child was making. My daughter questioned me on my stance and how a Christian could be so cold hearted towards their own son. She asked for reassurance in case she was in that situation.
Both of these situations led me to my readings this morning that I thought to share. Maybe there is someone in your life that needs to hear what you think about them, for it could very well be their last or first!
Blog link I found that demonstrates my thought well. https://helpfulinspirationalblog.wordpress.com/who-i-am-makes-a-difference/

Hearing Then Doing....
The other day during morning prayer, I was impressed with a desire to help a neighbor who I knew by observation only, that they were struggling. Much like in India words were not needed, one could tell just by looking. My initial thought was to provide a ham since Easter was coming, and that would be a luxury they would not be able to afford. Since I was aligning an outreach in India, I thought I should do the same on my own street.
What happened next though I did not expect or plan. Once I had determined to give, I asked my husband to pick up a ham when he went to the store. He agreed and was going to get it the next day when they went on sale. All that was good except later that day I had an urging that said I needed to go now. So I stopped what I was doing and put on my shoes and said, "Okay Lord, you are gonna have to help me here, because I do not know what to say".
So down the street I go and I notice a truck parked outside the small home with another lady sitting on the porch with the mom I had decided to help. Upon walking up I said hi and realized something was terribly wrong! The mom was desperate and hurt, having recently been run over by a truck and was scrapped and bruised all over! She was lucky to be alive, but was hit with unexpected bills from the injury that took all of the wind out of her sail! She was desperate for any kind of help, mainly food and water to help feed her son.
When I offered my assistance to get her some food and water from our house, and go to the store and pick up some basic needs she said, "Please save the receipts and I will pay you back". I assured her it was fine and the lady next to her said, "Just thank the Lord, because he is the one that sent her"!
Now I had said nothing to this lady and had never seen her before, but she was prophesying for me! You want to talk about a God moment! What I learned is that when God gives us a prompting, no matter how small, we are to move! He needs you and me on the scene to be his hands and feet now! Not tomorrow when the sale is on, or when our schedule allows, but now! If we wait we can miss the opportunity to help, and be encouraged ourselves while growing in our faith, as we continue our walk and become all he has called us to be!
I pray you are encouraged to continue your walk of faith and obedience, seeking God's face each day and listen to his still small voice!
Godspeed!

We Are Not Alone!
As Christians we have the holy spirit in us, to guide us and help us to know and hear his direction for our lives and those around us. How many have watched the show "Touched By An Angel"? Often times that is how I see my role as a Christian. I am on a mission for something greater than me, with a understanding that I am just a vessel being used for God's spirit to flow through me to others, who are in need of encouragement, a helping hand, or just a shoulder to lean on. God's hands and feet...
In a small group I recently joined we are learning to listen to God's call on our lives and how he speaks to us. As you may imagine every way is unique to the individual and the setting, as we share personal journeys and stories to encourage and pray for each other.
What it does remind me and encourage me though is that we are not alone. Often times we get caught up in our own bubble and think no one cares, but God's word reminds us that we are never alone, even when no one is around. His spirit resides in us and when we seek him, he is always there. We then have the opportunity to reach out to others in the natural, pointing to Jesus so that he can then speak to them in his spirit.
Many are aware that I have started an outreach in India through the help of colleagues on the ground and support from friends here in the states, with a desire to show them God's love by helping to meet their immediate needs in a very practical way, and point them to Jesus for everlasting life.
I am asking for prayer for this mission and those who are serving and others who are giving selflessly financially that they will be encouraged and strengthened in their journey as well, and will grow stronger in their faith, as God's word goes forth in this hill station in Southern India.
Attached is an outreach video to share with others. As you watch, please pass along to your prayer groups and pray each day as we approach Easter, that God's word would fill these people's hearts in a mighty way, in Jesus Name!

That's What Faith Can Do!

During the lenten season of reflection and doing things are little more intentional, a few years back I adopted a more deliberate prayer list. For those of you who use lists, you know it is a tangible way to see your progress. For others who tend to drift, it also helps to give one focus.
I must confess as a kid, I dreaded my dad's list in his little brown book, because I knew that "list" stood between me and the things I wanted to do on Saturday morning. I learned in a very tangible way that the quicker that list was eliminated, the sooner I could play. I cannot say that the quality of work was on my mind either, until I had to redo a few things. Oh the lessons we learn and pass on....
As I started this exercise, it seems that there are more and more people and opportunities that have come to my attention that I can pray for and about. The neat thing is, as I have made this commitment to pray for them daily, the lists is getting longer, but also shorter at the same time, as I see answers to those on my list on a daily basis. It is as if, the more I put down the faster they get answered. WOW! Not that is a faith builder if ever there was one!
For those that are answered, I marked them off and write thank you! It has become a very tangible and daily reminder of God's word and his promises. "You have not because you ask not. In all things with thanksgiving let your requests be know to God". The author and finisher of our faith!
What a blessing we have as Christians to be able to pray and know that we have an advocate with the Father in heaven through Jesus Christ. Are we using that gift that God has so freely given to all of us, for his good and for those around us?
I am reminded through this simple exercise that no matter where we are, or what we do for a living, we come in contact with people everyday that we can pray for. As a result, we have a chance to make a difference in people's lives. The question is are we?
As I continue in my lenten exercise in a very deliberate, intentional manner, my confidence in God's divine provision and blessings grow daily. I encourage you to start your own list, and see if God does not speak to your heart as well, and help make a difference in the lives of people around you.

It's Way Beyond Me!

As others have shared their journeys of trials and hardships and reflecting on my own, I recognize there are good times and bad for us all. What we have as Christians though is a hope and promise that God is working behind the scenes for our good. Valleys are part of our journey in this life, just as rain and sunshine go together, mountain top experiences are followed by valleys.
Through every trial I have learned to see it as God's steering, whether to a better place, or out of harms way. As I look back I am encouraged to keep pressing on, even though I have no idea of what lies ahead, I do know my past is proof of his sovereignty in my life for good.
I reflect today on where I have been and where I am currently. I sit and look at the space I now inhabit compared to where I have lived. Though I have very little in earthly possessions and opulence in my present surroundings, there is a peace that passes understanding and knowing that I am where I am suppose to be for this moment and doing what I was made for. A sense of fulfillment that only comes from above.
I was taken from my mother's womb, adopted, placed in a Godly home to learn about his love and grace. I had people speak into my life through good and bad times, became a mother, divorced, was poor, rich, in need, blessed beyond measure and through it all, "I have learned to trust in Jesus, I have learned to trust in God, I have learned to depend upon his word." I know the plans I have for you to give you a hope and a future. I knew you before you were born, I took you from your mothers womb.
Just a few of the many scriptures paraphrased throughout the bible to encourage each of us and strengthen us on our current journey. In reading and reflecting we can see that God is sovereign and is working all things to good to them that are called according to his purpose.
When we turn our lives over to God and allow him to steer our ship, he will take us places we have never dreamed of! Here is a song that resonates with me a lot lately...

Are We Passing the Tests?
The other day I had a young student who was making bad choices, so as standard practice, I asked him to sit out and reflect on his choices while I continued working with the other students. I then approached his tantrum of kicking a padded post and crying. I asked if he understood what he had done wrong and he said yes and was able to explain. I encouraged him to ask Jesus who lives on the inside of him, to help him when he is tempted to make a bad choice. He said he had, but it didn't help. I had to smile at his innocence, but also thought of us adults. How easy it is to say I tried, but then the temptation was too great, so I did what I wanted because it was easier, I needed the money, everyone else was doing it etc..
God's word on the inside of us however, helps us to stand strong when we are tempted.
1 Corinthian's 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
Just the other day I found out that a development where I had bought a lot has been foreclosed on and my lot is not able to be developed, because the infrastructure is not completed. That means I continue to be liable for an improvement bill on the property, that is no longer in business. Hmmm....In the natural that does not seem right and many other lot owners have stopped paying their taxes and fees feeling more than justified in doing so. As I contemplate this action myself, I reflect on what God's word says and what his spirit in me says. As much as I would like not to pay, I know that as God's child I have to take the high road, even when it costs me financially and is not fair in the natural.
How about you? Are you giving in to peer pressure, financial issues, or a selfish desire? When we pass the small tests, God is able to use us for something bigger. Throughout the bible it talks about the talents and multiplying those who were faithful in the small and being rewarded with more. He says that when we are faithful in the little, he can entrust us with more. Luke 16:10 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much."
Are you in the furnace of temptation right now, being shaped for God's work, passing the integrity tests?
In the bible it says that we are light in darkness. Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed. Romans 12:2 "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will."
I encourage you to stand strong and when in doubt ask, what would Jesus do? All to quickly the answer becomes crystal clear!
Godspeed today.....

All I Can Do Is Say Thank You!
While in India my husband went on a hike with our school group, using a local guide as a standard procedure. It was to be a long and final hike of the season, so he was anxious but excited at the same time. Being a seasoned hiker in the states and former park ranger, his favorite place is the great outdoors.
Being in rural India however brings on a whole new dimension to hiking, but off he goes with backpack in hand ready for what the day brings, our at least he thinks. As I putter around the house and have a lazy day off, I await his return with shared stories and pictures. Instead however, I received a phone call that evening saying the local guide got lost and everyone was still in the woods, though exactly where they were not sure, but not to worry they would do their best to find them.
Well with night setting in I knew it was unlikely they would be found until the next morning, so I did what most people do in times of uncertainty, I prayed. Novel I know. My confidence in God's protective hand and knowing my husband's survival skills, allowed me to settle in for the night with relative peace.
Before going to bed, knowing there was nothing I could do, I thought back to the times in my life where I could see God's handprint and his divine guidance through impossible situations. With that I said a final prayer and rested, thanking God for my warm blanket and prayed for their warmth and protection as well.
Upon waking in the morning with still no word, I decided to call to get an update from those who were out looking. It was reported that they had indeed set up camp and built fires to keep warm and tried to sleep while waiting for daybreak to continue onward looking for a way back. Though it was unprecedented to stop, my husband had insisted to push on would not be safe for the kids, and advised that they needed to set up camp and build fires to keep warm with night setting in.With matches my husband just happened to have with him, they agreed to do so and stayed put, keeping everyone warm by the fires and trying to rest until they could see again at daybreak.
What they only learned later on was that there was a herd of elephants stampeding where they would have exited had they pushed on. In retrospect as stories were shared, they could see God's hand of protection in the midst of their storm. A calm and the right mix of people and resources too see them through their valley.
Have you ever experienced hardships, survived and was able to look back and say "WOW"
and been encouraged by God's divine provision! I pray we all have those moments of reflection that encourage us and others on our path to look to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, even in the most remote places, like India.
Blessings on your journey.....

Is God Alive in You?
One of my favorite hobbies is clearing property and improving a landscape. Over time and neglect, vines and thorns will grow around the base of a tree, and before long the tress will be covered. I will usually wait until the winter to do most of my clearing, so that I have less vegetation based on the natural growing season. With just a hand held clipper, I am then able to clear a lot of property.
This reminds me of is how it is in our lives when we neglect regular pruning of discipline, self-control and integrity. Without these key ingredients, our lives will get overgrown with weeds, briars and the cares of this world. Then a new year comes around or Lent, and we set goals to improve, with a new determination to make better choices and get rid of the weeds, or "lay aside the weights that so easily beset us". Hebrews 12:1
My approach to clearing, is much like satan does with us. He doesn't approach us when we are strong in the word and daily seeking God's face, rather he waits until we are weak from neglect in God's word and then he attacks. Just like I cut the vine at the base, then pulling it from the trees is easy, because it has not strength in itself, so satan does with us when we are not connected to God daily through fellowship, reading and prayer.
Once we are separated from God whether for a day, a week or longer, we become vulnerable to Santa's attacks. Over time we are easy picking, because we have lost contact with our source of strength, much like my vines.
In order to stay strong in Christ we have to make a daily commitment to seek his will and his direction for our lives. Reading God's word helps us to withstand the wiles of the devil, keeping us fit and healthy. Remember when Jesus was in the desert and fasting, because he was rooted in God's word, he was able to withstand the temptations, because he knew and believed God's promises.
Let us be reminded this Lenten season to stay grounded in God's word daily, seeking to have a closer walk with him through our daily activities, by what we listen to, read and do. Then when satan attacks, we are well able to withstand the temptations, because God is alive on the inside of us, and is fighting our battles for us! Exodus 14:14 "The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace".

40 Days On Purpose, One Step at a Time....
I remember when I first started teaching in an Episcopal School, during the Lenten season they would give 5 minutes of silence every morning after chapel to reflect, quietly or in writing. I chose at that time to journal, and now almost 20 years later I have developed that simple lesson into what is now my blog, and I have taught and led in a Christian school in India! Wow, go God!
These next 40 days I hope to continue that exercise, reflecting on how I am spending my talents, and what I want to accomplish in the next 20 years, Lord willing.
How about you? Are you willing to take those small seemingly insignificant steps to accomplish what is in your heart? Sometimes big dreams can seem overwhelming, but when we break them down into small steps, with God leading, they can accomplish great things over time.
Are you dreaming big, stepping out in faith to accomplish what God has laid on your heart? Are you willing to get started, today, going in that direction, trusting God to enlighten your path as you grow in him?
I challenge you to take the next 5 mins for 40 days and set aside that quiet time to reflect and think about God, and see the plans he has for you! Jeremiah 29:11. "For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope."
Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me". Step out in faith today and see if God won't take you places you never even dreamed of! Godspeed.....

Show Me Thy Way
As the Lenten season is upon us and we are being a bit more reflective, the question that comes to mind is what am I going to do different or better this year through all my various roles as a Christian, parent, spouse, friend, etc..? We all wear many hats and have many contacts throughout the day where our response, answers or lack of, makes an impact on ourselves and those around us.
As we look back and take encouragement from where we have been and where we we are now, may we also look ahead with continued hope and enthusiasm for what God has in store for us this year.
Our only question then is will we be too comfortable in our present circumstances, or comfort zones, to say yes, or too fearful of the unknown and feeling the need to have all the answers before letting go of the known, to embrace what God has planned for each of us?

My encouragement in 2015 is to "Let Go"of the need to control every step and "Let God" open and close the doors where he would have you go. Our role is to simply say yes Lord, not my will, but yours be done.

Lead Me To The Cross
Christ died that we might live and have eternal life! The ultimate gift of God's love to you! As we close this celebratory season of love and celebrating with friends and loved ones, help us to remember Christ's love for us, his children. His word says that he died for us so that we would have eternal life! John 3:16.

Have you accepted his unconditional gift of love and eternal life? If today was your last, where would you spend eternity? Would you have regrets for things not done or days wasted? Are you sharing the good news to those around you?
Lord, may our lives overflow with your love to all who are in our path, that they may come to know and trust you as their personal Savior! Let us live a life of irresistible influence to all we meet!
May we never forget the price that was paid for us all. Our righteousness is as filthy rags. Grace poured out unconditionally, sacrificially, not of works, least any man should boast.
May our lives reflect humble appreciation and gratitude for all Christ has done for us, as we in turn show that love to those around us, as we allow Christ to work in and through us.

Come As You Are!

Having grown up in the "South", I learned through watching, that people rarely said what they really mean. You always had to look for those hidden cues, to understand what they were really saying. Indirectly I think I picked up on the need to always put on a false front as well. Never let them see you sweat! While that has its' place in the business world and on the playing field, it rarely bodes well for close relationships. How many of you can relate to perfect people, or people who think they are perfect? What makes lasting friendships and close relationships is going beneath the facade of being perfect, and accepting each other as they are.
When teaching young people, I encourage them to try new things, make mistakes and be okay with it. I explain it is a journey of learning. When you fall, get back up and keep trying. Eventually you will get better and fall less, but one of my class rules is no laughing! This allows the class to be emotionally safe to take risks and try new things, even at the risk of looking silly! My ability to connect, hinges on my willingness to be vulnerable, and share my own failures and ultimate success as encouragement for them to keep trying.
I love the chorus to this song, "There's no such thing as perfect people." How true that is. No matter how hard we try, we all need God's forgiving grace. Even if I could keep it all together on the outside, there are always those times where if I said what I really felt like, I would definitely be in trouble! Yet God sees my heart and thankfully my whispered prayers are heard. "Lord help me, I can't do this on my own". He is quicker and better than any cleaning agent on the market. He cleans up the inside, when my best is not good enough, nor ever will be. He died while we were yet sinners, and continues to forgive us as we walk in his grace and love, so that our lives are a living testament to Christ who lives in us.
Be encouraged today that God loves you just like you are, and he knows your weaknesses and strengths. He wants to use you just as you are, to reach others through your imperfections and resulting empathy as you point to him. If we remember the verse in the Lord's Prayer, "Forgive our sins, as we forgive others". Come as you are!

God Is For You!
I had the firsthand pleasure of experiencing a dad's gift to his daughter. He sought out the best with diligence and persistence. He studied what was available and after determining what was best with safety, performance and value, based on his experience and knowledge, he special ordered a car for her. Standard was not an option! He was so excited about its' arrival, that he visited the dealer daily to see if it had come in! He took pleasure in giving the best, to his daughter!
This reminded me again of how God feels about us, as scripture says in Matthew 7:11"If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!"
This morning the verse that I claim as my own and I hope you will too, is Hebrews Chapter 11 vs 6. It says, "Without faith it is impossible to please God, for he that comes to God must believe that he is, or exist, and that he rewards those who diligently seek him!"
What that says to me, that is reiterated in various forms throughout the bible, is that God wants to reward us! I knew you in your mother's womb, I know the hairs on your head, I know the plans I have for you to give you a hope and a future! The list goes on and on....
"I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them, I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them." Isaiah 42:16
I hope that whatever you are going through, that you are encouraged to keep the faith, trusting in God to reward you as a diligent seeker of him!

I Have Decided
We all face choices each day and compromise is the small little steps that lead to a gradual erosion of our faith and integrity. I currently teach young kids through sports and activities how to make good choices, building strong muscles of integrity through regular testing in game situations, with reinforcement for good choices and consequences for their bad choices.
We may not be murderers, or commit some other major atrocity, but what about that word, thought or small action that was seemingly insignificant. Choices, we all have them and make them everyday. Know that it is the small steps, forward or backward that make up our character and ultimately our destiny. We are all going somewhere based on our choices each moment. Being status quo, or treading water is a temporary condition that is used for transition, but rarely maintained for long periods.

As parents and teachers we know that eyes are watching us. As proclaimed Christians, you can bet that people are watching us too. Rarely is it what we proclaim, but rather what we do that makes an impact on those around us.
Small choices, little steps, that build us up or tear us down, and others around us that are looking for answers. Proverbs Ch.19 vs. 1 "Better is the poor that walks in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool". God help us to live each day as he would have us to live it, and shine as beacons to our families, friends, colleagues and loved ones today and the next...

Let Them See You In Me!
We are blessed to be a blessing to those around us in our sphere of influence. The other day while gassing up I noticed a advertisement for 10 piece nuggets for $1.49. I thought wow what a deal! Too bad I am not hungry. Then the thought occurred to me that maybe someone was, and I could buy it for them? Well after getting my gas I swung by and purchased the "special" and drove off wondering where the person was that was hungry.
As I start looking around on my drive back towards home I remembered my husband saying there was always an older gentleman in the Wal-Mart parking lot. So I decided to swing through, but no luck. I thought well Lord you're gonna have to help me find who is suppose to have these.
Just then I spotted a young man who was a midget in the legs getting on a bike, much to my surprise. Well I turned around and asked God him? He seemed to be doing fine, but what did I know? My thought was well Lord you know this is awkward, so if it is suppose to be him, let the opportunity arise that makes it possible.
As I drove along through the parking lot and then through another before getting back onto the hwy. the young man pulled up along side of me, with no one behind. I rolled down my window and asked if he would like some chicken nuggets. He immediately said sure and I handed him the bag. I said a prayer for his safety as he was traveling on home or wherever he came from, on a bike going on the same busy highway I was driving on. I said well I guess that's who I was suppose to give it to, and then I saw a billboard that said 1 in 5 children go hungry! That was the added confirmation I needed to say yes Lord, I got it!
Blessed to be a blessing! I had a car, money and a prompting. I hope you are encouraged today to look around and be a blessing to someone in your path! Godspeed to each of you....

My Little Light
One day while walking up the hill where we lived in Istanbul, the local vendor stopped me and proceeded to give me a small lantern pictured below. Neither of us spoke each other's language, so all of our communication was in gestures, yet there was a connection. He saw something in me that made him want to give this to me. I was humbled by his gesture because he was so poor, by comparison to me, yet he was so generous to those he met with offering a smile, greeting, hot cay or a simit, all that he had. He was letting his little light shine to those in his path! Hmm...
What he did not know that only God could though, is that I had been having a rough week. I was feeling like I was going uphill on every turn just to do what was right and truthfully I was feeling a little bit sorry for myself. Well, you and I both know God, he knows our thoughts and what we need and when. This little gift not only brightened my spirit, but continues to be a constant reminder to let my little light shine! Now it might not be the biggest or the brightest, but it is mine to share and shine the love of God to those I meet.
Are you feeling beat up a bit and frayed along the edges? Well I want to remind you that God is with you and will show himself to you in big and small ways, reminding you of his sovereignty afresh each new day. Smile, God loves you, right where you are!

Keep The Faith!
The other day while driving home from my walk on the beach, I realized the loner car I was driving did not have current insurance papers in the glove compartment. I was taking the back roads home and low and behold a road block was set up to check for no less than, current insurance and license. What a coincidence that the same time I realized I didn't have current papers, there was a road block. Yikes!
Well the officer asked for license and insurance papers as thought. I said yes sir and reach for my purse and gave him my license all while saying a prayer of "Lord I need some help here." When I handed him my license I mentioned that it was a loner car I was driving and it was not mine. He immediately said don't worry about the other papers then, I know what it is like to drive someone else's car and said to go on. I said a huge thank you and he further encouraged me not to come back that way as they were going to be there a while. I said yes sir and thanked him once again as I drove away!
That simple experience reminded me that God is always with us! Always! Even in little things that would seemingly trip us up. It encouraged me, because there are some bigger issues I have been praying for that I have not had answers to yet, and I was beginning to doubt. After this seemingly simple, yet profound reminder however, I was encouraged to keep believing and trusting God that even when it looks impossible and there is no way out, not to give up believing! If God cares enough about me to help with the little things, I can be assured he is in working all things to our good, even when we don't see it or understand. Faith, the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen.
Are you in that valley and needing some encouragement? I pray God shows himself to you today and reminds you that he does care and loves you right where you are, and that you can trust him!
Romans 8:28 "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." Keep the faith!
Psalm 40:3 "He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him."

Stay Strong.....
The verse that plays in my head this morning is a familiar one, "I will wait on you, oh Lord"! Many times I am called to wait! I am rearing to get moving, to make things happen in my own power, and I am told in my spirit to wait, and nothing is availing itself for me to move forward. I don't know about you, but waiting is hard for me!
Learning to relax and enjoy down time, refreshing our spirit and storing up for times ahead can be difficult for some. It reminds me of rest days just before a big race. I trained, worked hard, and then I must rest before the big day in order to have maximum strength and endurance.
Could it be God is asking you to rest now, because he knows what lies ahead and the resolve and strength you will need to endure, or are you fretting about things out of your control, not being able to change things and not sure what you are to do next? Regardless of whether you are called to rest, and or trust God during your difficulties, remember he is with you!
Psalms 23:2 "He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. Deuteronomy 31:6 "So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you."

Learning and Growing in Christ

Through it ALL, I have learned to trust in Jesus, I have learned to trust in God. A familiar verse to some, but look at what it says. I have learned, hmm..... How do most of us learn? I wish I could say it was by taking a pill, or even exclusively through other peoples mistakes, wouldn't that be convenient.
I think as parents we really wish this could be true, but ultimately we know it is not. The way a baby chick has to peck his way through the shell in order to develop the strength needed to survive, we also have to endure trials and tests of this life to grow strong as Christians. When we are weak, he is strong.

The way a baby chick has to peck his way through the shell in order to develop the strength needed to survive, we also have to endure trials and tests of this life to grow strong as Christians. When we are weak, he is strong.
I listened to a young lady speak on the radio about surviving a saline abortion, and how that survival and resulting handicap made her totally reliant on God. She says that if she had the chance for complete healing she would not take it, because she is so dependent on God that there is a closeness there that she would not want to chance losing if she could do everything without his help. Wow!
For all of us independent, determined, driven people, there is a message here for us. May we be gently reminded that all we have and are is because of God. Let us walk humbly and gratefully, looking and depending on Christ, not because we do not have a choice, but because we know that ultimately that is what is best for us. Help us to be wise stewards and commit our walk to him daily, so that when hard times come as they sometimes will, and the road we are walking seems all uphill, there is peace that passes understanding for having forged a deeper relationship with God, knowing he cares for us. He will see us through, and he does have a plan and is working all things for our good, even when we do not understand....

Come As You Are!
All God's Children-10/2008
I have learned through a daily prayer journal that God is faithful in answering prayers our prayers. We don't have to be perfect, we just have to come daily and drink from the living well that never runs dry. His word says if you abide in him and his words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and he will give it to you. He says to ask and receive that your joy might be full! John 16:23-24.
Have you accepted Christ into your heart? Are you asking? I encourage you today to take him at his word. You can have a relationship with God based on accepting him into your life. He says in his word that it will not return void. Are you asking for anything?
I recently sent some money to a nursing home in India to be used for the seniors there. What struck me as odd though is that they do not think to ask for anything above their basic needs and I do mean needs! The request came back for a jar of vaseline vicks rub and a bottle of energy drink. They do not even think to ask for something nice! Are we like that with God? Do we dare ask for the desires of our heart? If he is a loving parent that he says he is, that made us and knit us in our parent's womb, then why are we not asking? He desires to give us his best!
I encourage you this day to start a prayer journal and come as you are! Start asking and believing, and see if God doesn't show himself real to you each day!

I Believe!
As I start the New Year with my new list, I am encouraged to share a quick 'Ahhh' moment with you. Yesterday while running my errands I gassed up at a new gas station that offered cheap gas and is known for good fried chicken! It was a first, but I thought, why not, so after filling up I walked in to get a piece of chicken. My normal is a spicy breast, the "special" however was 2 breasts and a roll for $2.99. I asked how much for one breast and they said $3.90. As you can imagined I walked out with 2 huge, hot chicken breasts and a roll. Now what am I to do with the extra that I have?
In bigger cities it would be easy to find someone on the street corner that needed a hot piece of chicken, but not here. So off I drive to my next destination, all the while looking and thinking who is suppose to have this hot piece of chicken?
As I drive along the deserted beach stretch of Hwy 90 taking in the natural beauty, I am wondering where will I find someone here? Not exactly the hopping spot for someone looking for help. As you can imagine, not a soul on the horizon! So now I pray. Lord help me find someone to share this meal with. I continued driving and finally came upon the only store, on this lonely beach stretch that has been stripped of all businesses and homes since hurricane Katrina. So on a prompting I turn into a lone newer Wal-Mart with hopes of finding someone. I drove slowly going the full perimeter looking for someone in need. As I make my final stretch up to the front of the store, before heading back to the beach, I see a single gentleman with a back pack and a few personal belongings. Could he need a meal? I rolled down my window and immediately he jumped up and came over. I hesitantly offered him my box of chicken and explained I was given 2 for 1 if he wanted it? He quickly took it and said a hearty thank you with a smile!
I drove off encouraged that God was able to use me out of my abundance, which today just so happened to be a hot chicken breast and a roll! It made me smile too realizing that God can use all of us each day, out of the abundance that he gives to each of us!
Let me ask you? Do you have more than enough? Extra to share? Blessed to be a blessing? My hope is that you are as encouraged and motivated as I am, to be used of God each day this New Year of 2015!
Godspeed....

Joy Unspeakable!
I listened to a speaker once who talk about happiness and how to be happy. One of the things he mentioned was the exercise of writing down 3 things each day that you are grateful for. He had a list of some other simple exercises, but basically it amounted to giving to others and being grateful for what you currently have and reflecting on that daily.

Having lived in a rural resort area of South India, I was surprised at how happy the people were there! They come from all over India to the mountains there and ride bikes around a lake that is almost dried up because of a lack of water, bikes that are taped together, the place is dirty by my standards, yet everyone is happy, grateful, and having a blast! It is as if they do not know their condition? Hmmm...Maybe it is my condition that needs fixing and not theirs?
If we look at scripture we can see that ALL of God's children have reason for hope and happiness, IF our trust is in him and not our external condition. Where does your hope and happiness come from?
Whom shall I fear, the Lord thy God is with me. "Yeah though I walk through the valley of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me, thy rod and staff they comfort me". Psalm 23:4 Joy unspeakable!
"I lift up my eyes to the hills–where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip–he who watches over you will not slumber;
Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD watches over you–the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The LORD will keep you from all harm–he will watch over your life;
The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore". Psalm 121
We all have much to be grateful for! I trust you are not blinded by too much so that you can appreciate what you have is all a gift from God! Blessings to each of you....

Being Content and Abound
The book of Psalms is great for encouragement. During times of uncertainty we read and are encouraged in our walk to keep the faith, to press on even when we do not have the answers or know the way. God promises to always be with us and to guide us. Psalm 63:8 " My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me." When we are totally dependent on God for our every need, there is no need to question or doubt. Faith is real because it is proven daily for our edification, whether in lack or abundance.
Living in India, demonstrated this best to me. The young kids pictured here saw me one day and started running to catch up with me as I took my usual walk around the lake before heading home. They were so excited because they each had a piece of fried corn fritter of sorts, they were given by a local vendor and were happily munching on it. They were all smiles with their bare feet and dirty clothes, happy to show me their "catch"!
As we continued down the street together towards our homes, they chattered happily though what they were saying I do not know, but there was no disguising the fact that they were happy! As we went to cross the busy street, the boy with the baby in his arms, motions for me to come, come. Here I was thinking I was helping them and it was quite the opposite.
Shortly after they waved and said bye, they descended the bank off the main street to their grass hut and thatched roof by the stream. No beds, dirt floors, outdoor fires for cooking and heat. They had many reasons in my opinion to be upset or angry at life, instead they were grateful for the little things, daily substance, small miracles with grateful hearts!
My reflection was and still is am I grateful, humble and loving to a God that supplies all of my needs, or am I arrogant, demanding and unappreciative for his many blessings and daily provisions thinking pridefully that it is my own efforts and hard work that sustains me?
Where is my home, food, clothes and family? Am I doing without? Do I not have many reasons to be grateful? Thought provoking questions for us all.
My prayer continues," Lord help me be as appreciative as these kids in India were, at the very least, and reflect to those around me each day your love through me", in Jesus name.
